Human beings will never be convinced of something that is quite obvious: nobody laughs at God with impunity. The doctrine of the responsible parenthood, introduced in the Church since the Second Vatican Council, became a widespread practice. . , until it ended up as what was to be expected: a huge and outright failure. It was a prescription for good Catholics who were willing to safeguard their consciences (the other Catholics were never concerned with this problem) under the reassuring label of using only natural methods of birth control, which depended upon the fertility cycles of women. As everyone knows, Mother Nature (which should not be mistaken for the new deity discovered by the current President of Bolivia, Evo Morales) is not very enthusiastic about being classified according to very strict norms; it wishes to act rather on its own – with anticipated results. At any rate, fidelity to the teachings of the gospel was definitively ruined. The very teachings that for many centuries had influenced the lives of countless Christians of goodwill. We can specifically mention here the doctrine stating that Christian marriage is a glorious Sacrament whose main end is the procreation and education of children. To which we can add another: the meaning of Sacrifice and Love for the Cross, which impels us to consider the difficulties suffered due to the upbringing of children as a heroic and equally glorious work; the teaching that considers children as a blessing from God and not as a burden that we must endure; the teaching about our trust in the Paternity of God, whose Providence will always give, together with the children, the means to bring them up; the conviction that children are raised up better in the bosom of a large family; the mutual love of the two spouses and their spirit of generosity, along with the certainty that they are collaborating with God in the task of providing Him with new children; etc. But the secularizing wave also reached the Church. The New Times and its courtship of Novelties: the New Age, the Springtime of the Church, the New Pentecost, and Neo-Modernism –more concealed and disguised now, but embracing everything. Along with so much aggiornamento, fidelity to the Cross, the spirit of Sacrifice, Trust in God, and, in the end, Love for Jesus Christ, were definitively confined to the shelves of oblivion. The Church had been invaded by the eagerness for comfort, the desire for welfare and things of this world . . . and by the Fear of everything that implied sacrifice and effort. But Nature has its own logic –it is capricious, but it has its logic—, and the same can be said of human nature; therefore, once the failure of the natural methods had been attested and the door to hedonism (yearning for pleasure) had been left open, the latter had to be secured. Pharmaceutical contraceptives appeared –others had already been invented a long time before; they were only waiting to be activated—, and the use of pertinent devices became widespread. While the theologians were studying the possible legality or illegality of the famous pill –for about five years until finally the Encyclical Humanae Vitae was published—, its use was universal. To make a long story short, it would suffice to say here that the procedure to regulate (actually prevent) the birth of unwanted children became as popular as any other ordinary human activity. Soon, the Magisterium of the Church ceased to be relevant for Catholics; and, as for the traditional and time-honored Morality, even large numbers of priests ceased to enforce it in the confessionals. At present, advising the use of contraceptives has become the common practice. But we have already said that Nature has its logic; hence things continue their unfailing course. Once the idea of getting rid of unwanted children became widespread, and the old Society of Men became pagan to the marrow of its bones, and hedonism was enthroned everywhere…, abortion soon appeared. The current practice of abortion has been assumed as something normal and common; it has even become recognized by the Law of Men and hailed as a triumph of Progress. From now on, millions of mothers –and an equal number of fathers— will become parricides; that is, killers of their own children, with the scourge of a curse in their souls which will endure into Eternity, where they will be held accountable. Next came the alarming decline in the birth rate, the decadence of Europe and The debacle began with some innocent theories that tried to make Christian existence easier and more acceptable. Or to say it with other words, because there were many who were determined to believe that the wide path (which, according to Christ, leads to perdition), once it has been converted into a highway and duly marked, would equally lead also to Heaven. And all of this happened because men committed themselves to living according to the inventiveness of their own nonsense. |
