Modern society is determined to make what is not appear as what is, and vice versa. It prefers to perceive what it wants to see rather than face reality: men loved darkness rather than the light (Jn. 3:19). The reason for this aberration is not a mystery; in fact, it is given in the verse we have just quoted: because their works were evil. Therefore, it is evident that it is a matter of an option of the will, freely oriented to falsehood, rather than a defect of understanding.
Modern man, led by his own pride, has separated himself from God and has fallen into the most spectacular ridicule anyone could have ever imagined. The only reason the creature rejects God is because he wants to be his own god... and also the god of others: why would a self-proclaimed god not want to impose his dominion on every person and every thing? This presumption can be called ridiculous if you want to use the mildest appellative, though it may be the most appropriate. Undoubtedly Lucifer, besides being the Great Liar, is also the biggest Clown the History of the World has ever known; nobody could ever be the victim of such an appalling ridicule as his. Satan does not realize this of course, for he does not cognize or re-cognize anything that is true, and his understanding is incapable of perceiving reality except through a twisted and warped eye. He lives on lies and in lies, but he does not admit this since, in doing so, he would be accepting the truth. Now, pride is the same as the lie, and the lie always ends up revealing itself as a clownish stunt. That is why if there is laughter in Heaven, as is expected, we must think of it as the place of eternal and universal mirth. Trying to take the place of someone superior is a foolishness whose magnitude, if it could be measured, would depend on the distance between the pretender and the one being pretended. If the distance were infinite, the foolishness would have to be infinite; to consider it just as outstanding stupidity would be doing it a favor, and attributing to the pretender the role of a clown would be an exercise in commiseration. But we must keep in mind that one cannot mistake the professional clown for the witless clown that does not try to be funny. The former’s job is to make people laugh by raising their hilarity with his comical acting. The public laughs at actions and expressions that are as humorous as they are foolish and outlandish, but always without mocking in any way the person of the clown. As a matter of fact, you could say that the better a professional clown performs, the more respected and esteemed he is as a person. On the other hand, the unintentional clown does not act in a feigned manner nor intend to make people laugh; very much the opposite, his foolhardiness flows naturally from a just imbecilic heart. There are many rebels in modern society who also fall into foolishness, since they pretend to be something they are not at all; they are believed only by people just as foolish as they are. Speaking of which, it may be helpful to recall the parable of the one hundred rebel sheep that we will explain next.
